Berkeley Garden ADU

Berkeley Garden ADU

This project converts an existing 470-square-foot garage and office into a light-filled, one-bedroom Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) featuring a full kitchen and bath. Intended as a future home for the owners’ in-laws, the cottage will first serve as a temporary residence for the owners while they renovate their main house.

To honor the natural beauty of the lush Berkeley backyard and make the compact footprint feel incredibly spacious, the design maximizes daylight and indoor-outdoor connection through expansive, thoughtfully placed windows. Operating within a limited budget, the project succeeded by establishing clear priorities, strategically directing resources to the design elements that would make the greatest impact.
